CONSEQUENCES OF INTENATIONAL MIGRATION IN OAXACA

International migration significantly impacts Oaxaca, bringing both benefits and drawbacks. Remittances from migrants are a crucial source of income for many Oaxacan families and, in some cases, even fund community infrastructure such as schools and roads. However, this dependence on remittances can also hinder the development of local productive activities.

On a social level, migration often leads to family disintegration, as parents leave their children in the care of relatives, which causes emotional strain and affects family stability. Traditional family roles shift, and many women become heads of household. Additionally, many young people choose to migrate abroad in search of better economic opportunities rather than pursuing education or local employment.
