MIGRATION

What is migration?

Migration is the movement of people from their usual place of residence to a new one, either across an international border or within a country. While there are no universally agreed-upon definitions for the terms "migration" or "migrant," several definitions have been developed in different contexts and are widely accepted. For example, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs defines a "long-term migrant" as a person who moves outside their country of origin for a period of at least 12 months.

Migration in Oaxaca

Oaxaca ranks fifth among Mexican states with the highest number of residents living abroad. During the five-year period from 2015 to 2020, a total of 34,644 people originally from Oaxaca emigrated to another country. It is estimated that between 2015 and 2020, 1,487 people left Oaxaca for another state in the Republic due to insecurity or violence. However, 4,427 people arrived in the state from other parts of the country, also driven by insecurity or violence.
Oaxaca ranks eighth among Mexican states as a major source of migrants to other states within the country.
