CAUSES OF INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION IN OAXACA

International migration from Oaxaca stems
from a combination of structural,
economic, social, and cultural factors.

Economic causes

The main reason why Oaxacans emigrate is the search for better job opportunities and higher salaries abroad. Lack of work, low salaries and scarce availability of well-paid jobs in the region drive many to look for options, especially in the United States, where they expect to earn more and find better living conditions.

Social and structural factors

Beyond the economy, social and structural problems also drive migration. These include limited access to education and healthcare, discrimination against groups such as Indigenous peoples, and poor living conditions due to a lack of basic services. Families leave in search of better opportunities elsewhere.

Violence and insecurity

Violence and insecurity also significantly drive migration from Oaxaca, often forcing people to flee threats and persecution. This exacerbates existing economic hardships, driving more people to seek safety and well-being abroad. Between 2015 and 2020, more than 35,000 Oaxacans emigrated, primarily to the United States, due to these factors, along with changes in immigration policies and economic conditions both in Mexico and in destination countries.

These multifaceted causes highlight the complex nature of international migration from Oaxaca, emphasizing the need for policies that address both the underlying problems and the conditions that drive people to migrate.
